Tom Vaughan
Assistant Ecologist, BA (hons), MA
T om joined Wild Service in April 2024, which he does alongside his Ecological Traineeship at the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. Tom has gained skills and professional experience with a variety of taxa and surveys. His professional experience encompasses Phase 1/UK Hab habitat surveys, dormouse, reptile and bat emergence surveys, as well as Ecological Clerk of Works.
Before permanently joining Wild Service, Tom worked for us in a freelance capacity, co-authoring his first report in February 2024. His experience has developed to include preparing, protected species reports, Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Habitat Management Plans, BNG condition assessments, and a variety of other reports.
Tom joins us after a rich foundation of consultancy experience, with sub-contractual work alongside a variety of locally and nationally recognised consultancies. This has seen him expand his fieldwork skills to new methods of surveying bats and dormice.
Tom’s Traineeship at Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust has seen him gain experience in GIS and QGIS mapping, carrying out botanical condition assessments on reserves and habitat creation to support species recovery. Tom is also a member of Gloucestershire Bat Group, helping the caving expedition monitor hibernation roosts. Tom participates in the Gloucestershire chapter of Toads on Roads, protecting amphibians during their breeding season.
